Description

Women's right to education seems like an endless journey. Just a few years ago, Malala Yousafzai caught global attention with her relentless struggles in advocating for girls' education in Pakistan against the Taliban. But more than one hundred years ago, Indonesia already had Raden Ajeng Kartini, a young woman determined to provide education for girls and women which was a progressive idea at that time.

In remembrance of Kartini's contribution to Indonesian daughters, the third episode of Sinema Feminis will talk about women and education. We will watch "At Five in the Afternoon" (2003) by Samira Makhmalbaf followed by a discussion about the state of Indonesian girls and women's access to education these days. This movie depicts the struggle of Afghani girls under the Taliban regime and their silent and not-so-silent rebellion against oppressive patriarchal culture: by going to school.
